Wartime Letters and Diaries
The Wartime Letters and Diaries Collection brings together handwritten letters, diaries, envelopes, photographs, and related printed materials documenting the experiences of Vietnamese people during wartime. Written by soldiers and civilians and exchanged between the front lines and home, these personal records preserve intimate accounts of separation, family relationships, love, hardship, hope, and everyday life amid conflict. Wartime correspondence has been recognized as an especially valuable historical source because it records experiences and emotions in the words of people who directly lived through war.
By preserving the original manuscripts alongside their physical traces—handwriting, stamps, envelopes, photographs, and signs of use—the collection offers researchers and the public a window into the human dimensions of twentieth-century Vietnamese history that are often less visible in official records. It also contributes to ongoing efforts to preserve wartime letters and diaries as part of Vietnam’s historical and cultural heritage.
